Summer in New Zealand means one thing for many drivers: more time on the road. Beach trips, visits to family, road trips with mates - the open road calls, and for newer drivers, that means facing situations they might not have encountered yet.
Here are a few things worth keeping in mind before hitting the road this summer:
1. Check the vehicle before you go. Long drives put more strain on a car than the daily commute. Tyres, brakes, oil, and coolant should all be checked beforehand - a few minutes in the driveway can save a lot of trouble on the open road.
2. Plan for fatigue, not just distance. Summer road trips often mean longer hours behind the wheel, sometimes in heat and holiday traffic. Build in regular stops, share the driving where possible, and don't underestimate how tiring unfamiliar roads can be.
3. Expect the unexpected. Holiday roads bring more traffic, more distractions, and more unfamiliar situations, from tourists unsure of the road rules to stock on rural highways. Staying aware of what's happening around the vehicle, not just directly ahead, makes a real difference.
